GETTING INVOLVED

BECOMING A VOLUNTEER

VOLUNTEER

The role of volunteer doesn’t require any specific knowledge or experience in the intellectual disabilities field. Your involvement as a volunteer pre-supposes only one thing: having the desire to sincerely commit to someone in order to help them to fully realize themselves.

To get pending members sponsored, Parrainage Civique Montréal is always looking for volunteers, like you, who want to commit to becoming a volunteer and to give 5 hours of their time a month, for a minimum duration of one year, to a person with an intellectual disability.

Si vous êtes âgé de 18 ans ou plus, Parrainage Civique Montréal est toujours à la recherche de bénévoles, comme vous, qui ont envie de s’engager pour devenir parrain ou marraine.

TESTIMONIALS

BY PRECIOUS VOLUNTEERS

It was by happy coincidence that I found this invitation to become a member of Parrainage Civique Montréal. Initially, it is only a somewhat fuzzy idea, a little risky even. After all, we do not know with whom we will be paired. And then there are all my fears: will I be up to the task? Is she going to love us, accept us?

Indeed, the twinning also concerns my entire small family: my wife Madeleine and my children who gladly agreed to live this adventure. I am convinced that this kind of involvement opens hearts and minds, makes us better people. That said, the first meeting takes place in the offices of Parrainage Civique Montréal. I am impressed by Sylvie's courage. She has experienced many hardships in recent years and yet she embodies kindness and gratitude. A true force of nature! To be honest, it inspires me enormously.

Four months later, a letter confirms that our probationary time is over, but the fact is, I've had no doubts about the permanence of our relationship for a long time. Sylvie is now part of our family. The activities follow one another every two weeks: apple picking, Céramic Café, Sweet Isabelle, family lunch, picnic, dinner and culinary activity, cinema, walks at the Parc de la Visitation, the Parc des Hirondelles, the Petit-Train-du-Nord in Saint-Agathe, pumpkin decoration on Fleury Street, Dance-o-Town  at Parrainage Civique Montréal, Christmas with the family, Granby Zoo and so on.

Initially, we committed ourselves to a noble cause. But if I want to be honest, even if it's a bit "cliché", I clearly feel like I'm withdrawing more than I give. Sylvie is now a member of the family. She's a friend, a sister, she's our goddaughter and it's a chance to have her in the family. Thank you Sylvie!

Every time I mention that I am sponsoring a person with an intellectual disability, I am told, “It must be difficult”. And yet it is quite the opposite!

Being Sylvain's civic sponsor was one of my best decisions. Our friendship relationship is simple, honest and respectful! Each discussion teaches me more about his experiences, challenges and history. With every discussion, I grow and learn about who I am and who I want to become.

A beautiful human adventure filled with complicity!
